Vampire Knight is a shoujo manga, later turned anime series, written by Matsuri Hino. The series premiered in the January 2005 issue of LaLa magazine and is still on-going.
Chapters are collected and published in collected volumes by Hakusensha, with forteen volumes currently released in Japan, all the same it is currently available in different languages around the world. The English adaptation premiered in the July 2006 issue of Viz's Shojo Beat magazine, with the collected volumes being published on a quarterly basis.
The story initially takes place at Cross Academy, a prestigious private school with a very particular and unusual class structure. The student body is divided into two classes: the Day Class, which is made up of your every day average students, and the Night Class, an elite group of 'beautiful people', however unbeknownst to the majority of students, and even most of the school day staff, the Night Class is actually made up entirely of Vampires.
Cross Academy turns out to be the playground to a secret coexistence experiment and first step into a more permanent peace treaty between the deadly and fierce blood-suckers society and the human race.It is well knows that for centuries, vampires and humans have been torn in never-ending bloody conflicts. This is why Chairman Cross, a kindhearted former vampire hunter, made a deal with both the Vampire Hunters Association and the Vampires Council and opened this school where humans and night-walkers can learn to live together in peace.
The heroine and school chairman's adopted daughter, Yuki Cross, is one of the few humans who are aware of the school's secret. Behind her Day-Class Prefect cover she serves as a Guardian, dedicated to maintain the peaceful yet fragile coexistence of the Day and Night Classes with her childhood friend Zero Kiriyuu, who lost his family to vampires at an early age and also count with hidden secrets to be revealed. While this happen, the Night Class President, who turns out to be the pureblood vampire that once saved Yuuki, also keeps an eye on her and move his pieces to achieve his own secret agenda.
This unlikely vampire with a savior complex is Kaname, the last living Kuran pureblood and rightful heir to the Kuran Clan, a gentle and well-mannered vampire who is so much more than meet the eye...
Matsuri Hino a former bookstore shopkeeper, burst onto the manga scene only nine months after she decided to become a manga-ka artist with her first published series Kono Yume ga Sametara (When This Dream is Over) appeared in LaLa DX magazine in 1995. Her following series Toraware no Minoue (Captive Circumstance) and MeruPuri also turned into quick success and allowed Hino to establish herself in the world of shōjo manga. Now, Vampire Knight her latest on going series runs in the monthly LaLa magazine.
Her unique style seems to have matured enough and details she gave to her drawings always seem to fit the scenes, Hino also commented that she enjoys creative activities and she is always looking for new ideas as well as improving her stories.
